Seasons Greetings from the Transferware Collectors Club!
The brilliant red Poinsettias add a festive touch to the blue and white of these Indian scene transferware pieces. The footbath, chamber pot, and basin are from the Parrot Border Series with views of the Taj Mahal on the first two and of the “Cuttera at Maxadavad” on the third. The Taj Mahal source print is from Charle Ramus Forrest’s A Picturesque Tour along the Rivers Ganges and Jumna in India. The Cuttera source print is an engraving by George Cooke based on a William Hodges print in John Pinkerton’s A General Collection of the Best and Most Interesting Voyages and Travels in All Parts of the World. The maker of this series has not been identified by a marked piece. The two-handled covered cup shows the “Gate Leading to a Musjed at Chunar Gar” and is by John Rogers & Son based on a source print in Thomas and William Daniell’s Oriental Scenery. This publication also provided the source print for the view of the “Chalees Satoon at the Fort of Allahabad” on the partially visible unmarked pitcher at the far left. The Daniell’s prints were used by at least seventeen potteries. Credit to Michael Sack’s India on Transferware for the information on the patterns. All these patterns and sources are included in the TCC Database.
